Adobe Photoshop's Generative Fill and other AI features write C2PA (Content Credentials) into your exported images. When you upload those files to Instagram, Pinterest, or Facebook, the platform detects the metadata and adds an "AI Info" or "Made with AI" label—even if you only used AI for a small edit like background removal.
Why Photoshop Triggers AI Labels
Photoshop 2024 and later embed C2PA content credentials when you use:
- Generative Fill — Extending or replacing parts of an image
- Generative Expand — Expanding canvas with AI-generated content
- Remove Background — AI-powered selection and removal
- Neural Filters — Skin smoothing, style transfer, and similar tools
The C2PA data includes the tool name (Adobe Firefly), edit history, and generation parameters. Platforms like Meta scan for this metadata and apply labels automatically.
What Gets Embedded
When you export from Photoshop after using AI features, the file may contain:
- C2PA manifest — Cryptographic proof of AI involvement
- XMP tags —
xmp:CreatorTool,stEvt:softwareAgent, Adobe-specific fields - IPTC metadata — AI attribution fields used by Adobe
Even a single Generative Fill brush stroke can add enough metadata to trigger a label on the entire image.
How to Remove Photoshop AI Metadata
Option 1: Metadata Removal Tool (Recommended)
- Export your final image from Photoshop (File → Export → Export As, or Save As)
- Upload the file to a metadata removal tool that strips C2PA and XMP
- Download the cleaned image
- Upload to your target platform
Processing in the browser keeps your images private and avoids re-uploading to another service.
Option 2: Flatten and Re-export
Flattening layers and re-exporting sometimes reduces metadata, but C2PA from Generative Fill often persists. Results are inconsistent.
Option 3: ExifTool (Advanced)
Command-line users can run ExifTool to strip specific metadata blocks. This requires technical setup and may not remove all C2PA nested structures.
Important Notes
- Metadata removal does not affect pixel quality. Your image looks the same.
- Platforms may update detection methods. What works today may need adjustment later.
- In the EU, the AI Act may require disclosure in certain contexts. Check local requirements.
